MARCH IS THE REAL BEGINNING

MARCH IS THE REAL BEGINNING

I’ve never quite believed that January is the true start of the year.

January feels suspended. Cold. Quiet. Slightly in hibernation. We write resolutions while the trees are still bare and the light disappears by late afternoon. It always feels a little premature. As if you are still in the middle of something… not quite there yet.

March is different.

March carries movement. The air softens. Windows open a little longer. Nature begins again without asking for permission. And somehow, that feels like the real new year.

This is usually when I feel the urge to freshen up. Not in a dramatic Marie Kondo way. Not with a full house overhaul. Just slowly, gently… making space.

Decluttering in spring doesn’t need to be ruthless. It can be thoughtful. Start small. A drawer. A forgotten shelf. The corner that has quietly collected things you no longer love, yet avoid looking at because it would become one more thing on the never-ending to-do list.

The question isn’t “does this spark joy?” It’s simpler than that. Does this still feel like me? Does it still serve me?

Clear the surfaces first. Let the room breathe. You’ll be surprised how much lighter everything feels when there’s space around it.

Then look at the foundations. The floor. The sofa. The bed.

Sometimes freshening up isn’t about adding more. It’s about changing one anchor piece. Maybe fresh linen. Or a lighter, transitional rug like the Karan Carbon Rug, enough to shift the energy of a room completely. Less winter weight. More openness. It grounds the space again, but differently. Ready for brighter days and open windows.

The same goes for textiles. Swap heavier layers for breathable ones. Keep comfort, lose the bulk. Spring doesn’t ask us to start over. It asks us to soften.

There’s something hopeful about preparing a space for what’s coming next. Not because trends say so. Not because we must redecorate. But because creating room, physically and mentally, makes newness possible.

Maybe that’s why March feels like the beginning. It doesn’t force change. It simply invites it.

And that feels far kinder than cold, grey January ever did.
