ON THROWS AND COLDER DAYS AT HOME
The past few days have felt colder than expected. Not the dramatic kind of cold, but the Maltese kind; “bard ixoqq il-għadam”, as we locals say. The sort that “cracks” the bones slowly, helped along by the humidity, and somehow makes indoors feel just as chilly as out.
It’s around this time that throws stop feeling optional. When warmth and basic comfort are no longer nice to have, but quietly essential.
They’re not always the first thing we think of when furnishing a home. We plan sofas and beds. We choose colours and lighting. Throws tend to arrive much later. Usually when Aunt Lucy decides to hand us one for Secret Santa. And yet, when the temperature drops, little else feels quite as necessary.
Lately, I’ve been reaching for different ones depending on the moment. A soft, generously sized throw draped over the sofa for evenings that start with a plan and end with staying put. A lightweight, textured cotton throw folded at the foot of the bed, adding warmth without feeling heavy. The kind you pull up just a little higher on colder mornings. There never seems to be quite enough throws in this weather, does there?
Texture does most of the work here. A visible weave against a clean-lined sofa instantly softens the space. Something slightly tactile layered over smooth bed linen makes the room feel warmer before you even touch it. Even a simple throw finished with a subtle detail, like a fringe or a stripe, can add movement without asking for attention.

Colour is best approached gently. Neutral sofas welcome warmer tones beautifully. Calm bedding benefits from a throw that echoes one shade already present, without matching too closely. Nothing too perfect. Just familiar enough to feel considered.
And then there’s the part we don’t always admit. Throws are for the moments when you insist you’re not cold. For early mornings, late evenings, and sitting “just for a minute” that turns into much longer.
At ġulina Home, we think of throws as small acts of care. Practical, comforting, and easy to live with. The kind of pieces that quietly make home feel kinder when the air turns sharp.
Sometimes, that’s all we really need.
